For some time now, there has been a persistent rumor floating around the web on various blogs and forums, which said that Valve was going to introduce their popular game platform Steam to Linux.
This is something that really has geared up the Linux community, since the single biggest hurdle to get more people to convert from Windows to Linux has been Linux poor gaming performance.
So if Steam suddenly would be available in Linux, this would probably boost the use of Linux, through the roof.
However, Valve’s marketing VP Doug Lombardi Doug Lombardi turned down the heat about this matter in a rather straightforward way, as he meet up with GI.biz recently. To a direct question about whether Steam will be ported to Linux or not, Lombardi said that they’re not working on such a thing at the moment, without elaborating his answer further.
So sadly, judging by his statement, it seems that we should not expect to see Steam, show up in any package manager, anytime soon. However, Steam is now available for Mac, with some rather big titles coming up next year like Portal 2, so if the Mac version turns out to be a success, then maybe Valve might cast an eye towards the Linux community. But, until then their official statement, at least for the moment, is that Steam will not be available for Linux anytime soon.
